I used to volunteer at the plantation. I loved every aspect of it. From the children's quarters upstairs, to the updated house Ima moved into after electricity, to the main house with its delicate china and separate kitchen, to the ranch hand's house behind the office, to the stables and even the little garden near by. I first visited the plantation during a sixth grade field trip. I'm 33 years old now and never has it left my mind. The Varner-Hogg Plantation has history buried deep within its walls and within its soil. You can feel its magic when you walk along its garden paths, through its preserved dogrun, and peer through its antique windowpanes. Varner-Hogg holds a special place in my heart and I was so very proud to be a part of it.

I am very pleased to view a site in such preservation. I think more African Americans need to visit to view such authenticity of our heritage.
